Manitoba Organization: St. Charles Country Club

This private golf and recreation club in west Winnipeg was founded on 29 September 1905 by 23 prominent city businessmen. A. M. Nanton was elected the first president of the Club, with F. H. Brydges as secretary, and J. R. Waghorn as treasurer. They decided to purchase 200 acres of land along the Assiniboine River, near Sturgeon Creek, for $20,000. Debentures were issued to raise funds to build a clubhouse, stable, water tank and pump; an 18-hole golf course was planned, and club memberships were offered for $25 (men) and $10 (women).
