Historic Sites of Manitoba: Service Flying Training School No. 18 Relief Landing Field / Netley Field (RM of St. Andrews)

This site in the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews was established during the Second World War as a part of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. A relief landing field for the nearby Service Flying Training School No. 18, a triangular set of runways was completed in the summer of 1942, along with a few buildings to service the site. Operational into 1945, it was briefly used by Manitoba’s first gliding association, founded by the Manitoba branch of the Air Cadet League of Canada. Cadet training operations began on 5 May 1946 and continued for that year. Today, the runways have largely been removed and the area has reverted to agricultural cropland.
