Memorable Manitobans: Peter Johan S. Guenther (1897-1991)Educator. Born at Steinbach on 17 January 1897, son of cheesemonger Peter H. Guenther (1864-?) and Maria Schnieder (1872-?), his early years were spent on the family homestead in La Broquerie. He attended Normal School and worked over 40 years as a school teacher in rural Manitoba, including work at Randolph School (1921-1922), Sarto School (1923), Goodwill School (1923-1925), and Blumenhof School (1925-1926). He joined the Steinbach School District No. 65 as a teacher (1926-1947) and Principal (1936-1947) of Steinbach School, Principal of Southwood School (1947-1953), and lastly as a teacher at Elmdale School (1954-1962), after which he retired. On 2 November 1923, he married Agnes Wiebe (c1899-1987) and they had five sons: Lawrence Guenther, Bert Guenther, Peter Guenther, Ralph Guenther, and Dennis Guenther. He died at Steinbach on 23 February 1991 and was buried in the Steinbach Memorial Cemetery.
