Educator.
Born at Winnipeg on 4 August 1927, son of H. M. Nicholls, he attended Kelvin High School and later received BA (1948), BEd (1955), and MEd (1969) degrees from the University of Manitoba. He taught at Hapnot Collegiate and was Principal of the Hudson Junior High School at Flin Flon. He spent a year at the Brentford Secondary Modern School at London, England.
Returning to Winnipeg, he was Principal of West Kildonan Collegiate (1963-1965) and Garden City Collegiate (1965-1967), and Assistant Superintendent (1967-1969) and Superintendent (1969-1983) of the Seven Oaks School Division. Seconded in 1983 to the Manitoba Department of Education, he served as Assistant Deputy Minister and later Deputy Minister. He was President of the Manitoba Association of School Superintendents, a member of the Public Schools Finance Board, and a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Winnipeg. He received a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977) and was made a Life Member of the Retired Teachers’ Association of Manitoba (2017).
On 16 July 1955, he married schoolteacher Neva Yvonne George (1928-2012, daughter of John Albert George) at Deloraine United Church and they had two sons and a daughter. While living in Flin Flon, he volunteered with the Flin Flon Little Theatre, Flin Flon Minor Hockey Association, and Flin Flon Citizenship Committee. He later married Marg (?-?). He was a member of Immanuel United Church.
He died at Winnipeg on 9 July 2026.
