Memorable Manitobans: Edward Alexander Mroz (1908-2001)
Born at Brokenhead on 13 October 1908, son of Michael Mroz (1873-1940) and Anastasia Czuryllo (1873-1955), he attended Normal School and began working in rural Manitoba schools by the 1930s. His career included teaching at Winnipeg Falls South School (1936, 1940) and serving as Principal of Brokenhead School (1941-1944) and Lac du Bonnet School (1944-1947). From the late 1940s through 1961, he operated a general store at River Hills before returning to the classroom in Winnipeg, teaching for the Winnipeg School Board at Isaac Newton School (1961-1963), Aberdeen School (1963-1966), and Sisler High School (1966-1969), until retiring in 1973. On 26 August 1934, he married Anastasia “Nellie” Hutniak (1911-1971) at Beausejour and they had three children: Edward Nelson Mroz, Gary Mroz, and Valerie Mroz (wife of Greg Lupal). He died at the Seven Oaks Hospital on 11 February 2001 and was buried in the Holy Ghost Cemetery.
