Memorable Manitobans: John Stuart Monteith (1931-2009)

Educator.

Born on 20 September 1931, one of two sons of Dr. John Robert Monteith (1902-1964) and Florence Adeline (1906-1996) of Virden, he earned a BA degree (1960) from Colorado College. On 11 June 1955, he married Dorothy Marlene Murray (1935-2007) at the Carman United Church and they had two children. The newlyweds lived initially at Lloydminster, Alberta before returning to Manitoba by 1962.

He worked as an educator and taught at Rivers School (1962-1963) and Rivers Collegiate (1963-1967), and was Principal of Rivers Elementary School (1967-1969), Minnedosa Elementary School (1969-1971), and Tanner's Crossing School (1971-1974). In 1974, he joined the Winnipeg School Division and served as Principal of William Whyte School (1974-1979), Vice-Principal of Churchill High School (1979-1987), after which he served in a few temporary/acting Principal roles, including at Machray School (1988-1989).

He died at Selkirk on 31 March 2009.
