Memorable Manitobans: Jacob M. “Jake” Froese (1917-2003)

Farmer, MLA (1959-1962), MLA (1963-1966), MLA (1966-1969), MLA (1969-1973).

Born at Winkler on 28 November 1917, son of Jacob J. Froese and Margaret Enns, he was educated at Calder and Winkler schools. On 21 December 1941 he married Mary Peters, daughter of Frank H. Peters of Winkler. They had nine children. He was a member of the Winkler Credit Union Society and Credit Union League of Manitoba, Chairman of the Reinfeld School District and a director of the Manitoba School Trustee Association. He was first elected to the Manitoba Legislature at a by-election in November 1959, and was re-elected at the provincial general elections of 1962, 1966, and 1969 before defeats in 1973 and 1977. He was a Social Credit candidate for the Lisgar constituency in the 1974 federal general election but came in a distant fourth place. In the 1981 provincial general election, he represented the Progressive party but was again roundly defeated. He died at Winkler on 14 June 2003 and was buried in the Reinfeld Cemetery.
