Memorable Manitobans: Ernest Arthur “Ernie” Friesen (1917-2012)
Educator, municipal official.
Born at Gretna on 21 October 1917, the son of Aron L. Friesen and Tina Loewen, he graduated from the Mennonite Collegiate Institute in 1936 and from Winnipeg Normal School in 1937. He later earned a BA degree (1966). He taught at Bloomfield School (1936-1940), Plum Coulee School (1941-1946; Principal 1943-1946), and joined the Steinbach School District in 1946, later working as Principal of Southwood School (1953-1957), Elmdale School (1958-1962), Supervising Principal for the Steinbach Elementary Schools (1962-1966), and Assistant Superintendent of the Hanover School Division (1966-1980). He was Chairman of the Bethesda Hospital Board (1954-1979), Chairman of the Eden Mental Health Board, and a founding member of the Steinbach Lions Club (1974). He served on the Manitoba Film Classification Board for nine years, was Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the executive for the Manitoba Conservative Party. He was a Councilor (1980-1986) and Mayor (1987-1992) for the Town of Steinbach. He died on 14 August 2012 and his remains were cremated.
