Memorable Manitobans: Arthur Mervin “Art” Werier (1938-2020)Lawyer, athlete. Born in Winnipeg in 1938, son of Abe and Bessie Werier, he attended the Peretz School in his youth. His family moved to the River Heights area in his teens and he attended Kelvin High School where he was President of the Toppers. He studied law at the University of Manitoba (and later practiced law) where he played table tennis (1957-1960) and competed in Canadian and international championships. He was a coach, trainer, and official in table tennis at the 1967 Paraplegic Pan Am Games, 1971 Canada Winter Games, participated in four world and three Commonwealth championships, served for 22 years on the Manitoba Table Tennis Association, including a term as President, and was a founder of the Manitoba Sports Federation, serving as its Chair (1973-1975). In recognition of his community service, he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (2013). He died at Winnipeg on 21 August 2020. Sources:Obituary, Winnipeg Free Press, 29 August 2020.
