Born at the family homestead near Sandy Lake on 22 January 1930, son of John Shewchuk and Mary Kostiuk, he attended Jackfish Lake School on the edge of their property until the family relocated part way between Russell and Binscarth in 1946, after which he attended Binscarth High School.

In January 1951, he attended Central Normal School in Winnipeg and met fellow teacher Lena Nykolaishen (1931-2016). They were married at the Greek Catholic Church at Sifton on 9 August 1951 and had three children. They both taught at Victoria Beach School (1951-1952), himself as Principal, followed with his teaching at Stockton School (1952-1953) and elsewhere within Manitoba until 1960 when they settled at Transcona. He worked for the federal government as an immigration officer and later an employment counsellor until retirement in 1988.
He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 16 November 2018.
