Memorable Manitobans: Max Paul Schatz (1931-2017)

Educator.

Born at Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on 23 February 1931, son of Reverend Henry Schatz (1899-1965) and Mathilda “Lydia” Schatz (1901-1983), he grew up at various communities as the family followed his father’s career to congregations across the western prairies, including Leduc and Calgary in Alberta, at Regina, Saskatchewan, and at Morris. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with BA (1957) and BEd (1964) degrees and received a Manitoba School Business Officials’ Certificate (1981).

He intially worked in the construction industry (1957-1959) before taking up teaching at Minitonas School (1959-1961) and was Principal of Birch River Collegiate (1961-1966) and Minnedosa Collegiate Institute (1966-1971) / Crossley Collegiate Institute / Minnedosa Collegiate Institute (1971-1972), then Assistant Superintendent (1972-1981) and Superintendent (1981-1989) of the Rolling River School Division. He served as President of the Swan Valley Teachers’ Association (1963-1964) and the Rolling River Teachers’ Association (1969-1970) and was active in the Manitoba Association of School Superintendents on various committees, as a chair, and as President (?-?).

On 1 July 1967, he married Libby Muller, whom he first met while at Minitonas, and the couple had two children. He was President of the Minnedosa Rotary Club (1975-1976) and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnedosa Credit Union (13 years). He was a choir member and Sunday School teacher at Minnedosa Covenant Church.

Upon retirement in 1989, he moved to British Columbia and settled at Penticton where he joined the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, served on its Board of Managers and joined its choir.

He died at Penticton on 14 December 2017 and his cremains were interred locally in the Lakeview Cemetery.
