Memorable Manitobans: Perley Alister Murphy (1887-1964)

Educator.

Born at Carberry on September 1887, son of John Murphy (?-?) and Sarah McKinnon (c1865-?), he attended teacher training and embarked on a career in education. He taught at Ellwood School (1905), Nairn School (?-?), Strathclair School (1911), and Tuxedo School (1915), and was Principal of Bradwardine School (1916-1918), Isabella School (1921-1922), and Glenella School (1922-1926).

On 3 July 1922, he married Sally Gledhill (1890-1976) at Winnipeg and they had two children: Eileen Pearl Murphy (1924-?, wife of R. Goring) and Charles Alister Gledhill Murphy (1925-1987). The family moved to British Columbia around 1934, where they later resided at 1775 Pendrell Street at Vancouver.

He died at the Vancouver General Hospital on 29 June 1964 and his remains were cremated.
