Educator.
Born at Fort William, Ontario on 25 December 1922, son of Arthur Long and Lily Smith, he became an educator. He taught at Carman School (1950-1952), was Principal of Lac du Bonnet School (1959-1962), Beausejour School (1962-1964), and Crossley Collegiate Institute / Minnedosa Collegiate Institute (1965-1966), and was Superintendent of the Agassiz School Division (1966-1969). He went on to work for the federal government’s Department of Regional Economic Expansion at its Thompson office in 1975, later transferring to its Winnipeg office.
On 11 July 1957, he married at fellow teacher Winona Elaine Kinnaird Pratt (1923-1996, daughter of Albert Maurice Pratt) at St. Philip’s Anglican Church in Norwood. The couple had four children: Andrea Long, Ross Long, Rex Long, and Laird Long. He retired in 1989 and moved from their home in St. James to British Columbia, residing initially at Victoria and later at Delta.
He died at the Delta Hospital on 29 January 2004 and his cremains were interred in the Royal Oak Burial Park Cemetery.
