Memorable Manitobans: Peter Cown Jessiman (1899-1984)

Businessman.

Born at Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 1 May 1899, the youngest son of nine children born to William Jessiman and Jane Ritchie Jessiman, he trained as an engineer at the Albion Motor Works in Glasgow. During the First World War, he served in the British Imperial Army in France, Turkey, and the Mediterranean region.

In 1922, he came to Canada and managed the H. L. Perry Storage Company until 1962. He founded the family business, Jessiman Brothers Cartage Limited and associated corporations, and was Board Chairman until shortly before his death.

On 2 February 1923, he married Elizabeth Scarlett (?-1969) at Winnipeg and they had six children: Maud Jessiman (wife of Stewart Searle), Elizabeth Patricia Scarlett “Patty” Jessiman, Grace Jessiman (wife of Wilhelm Treidler), William Robert Huntly “Bill” Jessiman (1926-2022), Ian Low Jessiman, and Duncan McFarlen Jessiman. The family lived at 627 Spruce Street and 870 Wellington Crescent.

He was a member of the Winnipeg Rotary Club, Gyro Club, Carleton Club, St. Andrews Society, Winnipeg Winter Club, Niakwa Country Club, St. Charles Country Club, Isaac Brock Community Club (President), Masons (Landmark Lodge), and Khartum Shriners. He served on the Winnipeg School Board for eight years. In recognition of his community service, he received a Manitoba Centennial Medal from the Manitoba Historical Society (1970).

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 21 February 1984 and was buried in the Garry Memorial Park.
