Memorable Manitobans: Sylvia Jane Evans (1952-1995)

Lawyer, community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 13 July 1952, adopted daughter of Lillian Jean Minnis (1918-2001) and Edward Gurney Vaux Evans, she attended Balmoral Hall and Kelvin High School, graduating in 1969. She subsequently received BA (Honours) English (1973) and LLB (1976) degrees from the University of Manitoba then articled in Law with the firm of Aikins MacAulay and Thorvaldson.

After being called to the Manitoba Bar in 1977, she remained with the firm as an associate and became a partner in 1984. She was made a Queen's Counsel (1993). For eleven years, she was a sessional lecturer in Solicitors Transactions at the Faculty of Law, University of Manitoba. She was course head for the Wills and Estates segment of the Bar Admission Course of the Law Society of Manitoba. She also led seminars on Ethics for the Bar Admission students. She was Chair of the Board for Legal Aid Services Society of Manitoba from 1989 to her death and she served on the RCMP Public Complaints Commission. She served on the board for numerous organizations, including the Junior League of Winnipeg, Big Sisters Association, The Family Centre, Balmoral Hall Alumnae Association, Winnipeg Art Gallery, and Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.

She died at Winnipeg on 13 August 1995, survived by her husband Don McLeod Campbell and two step-daughters.
