Memorable Manitobans: Daniel Logan “Dan” Daley (1917-1983)


Born at Chester, England on 14 March 1917, he married Delia Kennelly (1919-2005) in December 1939 at Woolwich, Kent, England and moved to Canada in 1952. The couple had seven children, two of whom were Geraldine Mary Daley (1942-1942) and Valerie Evelyn Daley (1943-1998, wife of Stuart Buckler). He briefly settled in Pine Dock before relocating to Meridian, and later Balmoral. A teacher by training, he taught several rural schools including Woodroyd, Balmoral School and Matheson Island School District No. 1933 before moving to Fort Garry, where he lived for 17 years and resided at 515 Hudson Street. He joined the Fort Garry School Division and was Principal at St. Avila East School (1958-1965), St. Avila West School (1959-1965), Turnbull Bend School (1960-1963), and Agassiz Drive School (1961-1974), after which he retired and lived in North Wales for three and a half years. He returned to Manitoba and settled at La Salle before relocating to Balmoral in 1980. He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 4 May 1983.
