Memorable Manitobans: William Clark Sandercock (1877-1938)

Educator, poet.

Born near Hullett or Londesborough, Ontario on 20 May 1877, son of Richard Sandercock (1856-1886) and Sarah Jane Clark (1856-1923), he came west with his parents in 1880, grew up near Pilot Mound, and began teaching to finance his way through his studies (1906-1909) at Brandon College (1906-1909) from which he graduated with a BA degree (1909).

He taught in the Rural Municipality of Brenda (1901), as well as at Napinka School (1902-1903, Principal), Deloraine School (1904), Wawanesa School (1904-1905, Principal), Carberry School (1905-1906, 1908-1909), Virden School (1911), and in the Brandon School District No. 129 (?-?), in all his career spanning some 25 years within Manitoba classrooms.

On 3 July 1905, he married Marie Huehnichen (1879-1960) at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Brandon and had three daughters, Dorothea Frieda Marie Sandercock (1906-1986), Carmen Marguerite Sandercock (1910-2005, wife of Raymond Harrison), and Daphnie Phyllis Dawn Sandercock (c1918-2008). The family later moved to Saskatchewan where he resided at Pathlow. In 1935, a collection of his poetry was published under the title of The Dance in the Buffalo Skull.

He died at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 13 February 1938 and was buried locally in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
