Memorable Manitobans: Alexander Wilson Musker (1895-1970)

Engineer.

Born at Winnipeg on 11 June 1895, youngest of five children of Thomas Royden Musker (1862-1915) and Grace Georgina Richardson (1858-1924), he was educated at Winnipeg schools and the Halifax Naval Academy. In his early career, he a consulting electrical and refrigeration engineer on such projects as the original Minaki Lodge and the Fort Garry Hotel, and was a member of the mechanical engineering staff for the T. Eaton Company under Chief Engineer Hutt. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy and, after his return to Canada, was made an instructor in charge of the Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment College at Tuxedo.

In 1921, he established the Musker Engineering Institute and was its President and Principal, providing engineering instruction to men and women in private life. Around 1930, he moved to a building on Main Street. He was an associate of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, a teaching graduate of the General Motors Institute (Flint, Michigan), a life member of the Canadian Welding Society, and a first class operating engineer for the Province of Manitoba. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and was presented with its commemorative certificate for 35 years of service in 1967.

On 29 August 1922, he married Annie Rebecca Thompson Preston (?-1988) at St. James and they had four children: Grace Eileen Annie Musker (1923-?, wife of Carl G. Fritz), Shirley Margaret Musker (1925-1926), Patricia Jane Musker (1927-1927), and Alexander G. “Jerry” Musker (1937-1989, husband of Donna-Jean). The family lived at the Lord Arthur Apartments. He was a charter member of the Manitoba Travel and Convention Association and a member of the St. Anne’s Anglican Church, Royal Commonwealth Society, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, West Kildonan Chamber of Commerce (first President), and the Empire Club.

He died at the Deer Lodge Hospital on 6 January 1970 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery.
