Memorable Manitobans: George Moore (1891-1961)

Businessman.

Born in County Derry, Northern Ireland in 1891, he came to Winnipeg in 1912. He worked for the Lake of the Woods Milling Company until 1921 when he established Moore's Taxi. Over time, he acquired Grosvenor Taxi, Black and White Taxi, and several other companies. His fleet of taxicabs was, at one time, the largest of its kind in Canada. He also owned Moore's Fuel and Supply Company and Packard Winnipeg Limited, a local distributor of Packard automobiles. He retired from active involvement in business in 1948.

He and wife Elizabeth Ellis (1888-1976) had a daughter, Georgina Moore (1916-?, wife of Kenneth Gauntlett Rose). The family lived at 562 Agnes Street (c1931) and 344 Kingsway (c1961). He was a member of St. Matthews Anglican Church.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 1 July 1961 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
