Memorable Manitobans: Abram William “Abe” Krahn (1923-2016)

Educator.

Born near Altona on 15 October 1923, son of Abram A. Krahn (1895-1976) and Anna Wiebe (1896-1991), he grew up at Sperling and graduated from the University of Manitoba with BA (1958) and BEd (1960) degrees. He was the Principal of Whytewold Beach School (1953-1954) and Headingley School (1955-1956). By the latter 1950s, he had joined the St. James School Division teaching staff, working at Silver Heights Collegiate (1959-1969) and later was the Vice Principal of Deer Lodge Junior High School (1969-1970), Lincoln Junior High School (1970-1973), and John Taylor Collegiate (1973-1985). He also taught mathematics during his administrative years. On 2 July 1960, he married Grace Theresa “Gracie” Rattai (1934-2015) at Regents Park United Church in St. Vital. The couple had three sons and resided in Winnipeg until moving to South Surrey, British Columbia in 1999. He died at White Rock on 23 August 2016.
