Memorable Manitobans: Metro Kozak (1920-2006)

Educator, school inspector, administrator.

Born in the Mink Creek district on 2 April 1920, son of Michael Kozak and Helen Konowalchuk, he attended country schools and helped his parents with their general store in Ethelbert. After graduating from high school, he attended the Central Normal School until enlisting in the Canadian Army during the Second World War.

After his military discharge, he accepted a teaching position at Rhodes School (1944-1945), after which he attended the University of Manitoba and received BA and BEd degrees. He then taught at Henderson School in Dauphin and served as its Vice-Principal (1957-1958). He then taught French and English at the Dauphin Collegiate (1958-1959).

In 1963, he was appointed Supervisor for the Dauphin elementary school, moving to Gimli in 1965 where he was a school inspector for a year. He then became Superintendent for the Dauphin-Ochre School Division, holding the position until retirement in 1979.

On 20 July 1944, he married Nancy Patricia Burdeny (1920-2017) at Ethelbert and they had two daughters. He was an active volunteer, with the Dauphin Library Board, Manitoba Winter Games, Canada's National Ukrainian Festival, Dauphin Rotary Club, Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, Knights of Columbus, and Resurrection Parish Choir.

He died at Dauphin in February 2006 and was buried in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.
