Memorable Manitobans: Frances Elizabeth Kelty (1863-1953)

Educator.

Born at Ontario on 16 October 1863, daughter of Jane Currey (1828-1904) and Francis Kelty (1833-1907), she came to Manitoba where she was a long-time schoolteacher.

She was Principal of Starbuck School (1905) then she joined the Winnipeg School District where she was a teacher at Martin School (1907-1909), Lord Selkirk School (1910-1913), and Alexandra School (1913-1933), retiring in 1933. She resided with her sister Ellen Cooney Kelty (c1866-1943, also a teacher) at 469 William Avenue (c1911) and later lived at 180 Chestnut (c1934). She was an active member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. She moved to British Columbia around 1937.

She died unmarried at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, British Columbia on 8 February 1953. Her cremains were interred in the Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
