Memorable Manitobans: Mabel Lugo Newton Gowan (1877-1962)Educator. Born in Quebec City in 1877, daughter of Frances Frazer (1851-1907) and Charles Henry Newton, she came with her family to Winnipeg in 1882 and was educated at public schools and Manitoba College. She taught at Victoria School (1901-1903) and Fort Rouge School (1903-1904), from 1926 into the 1930s, was the Principal of a private school, St. Faith's, in her home. On 9 March 1909, she married Walter Sydney Gowan (1876-1961) at Winnipeg and they moved to British Columbia, returning to Winnipeg in 1915. They had three children: Charles Walter Gowan (1910-1995), Frances Evelyn Gowan (?-1982, wife of Cyril James Whiteway), and Walter Newton Gowan (1916-1987). The family lived at 109 Kingsway. She died at Winnipeg on 19 September 1962 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
