Born at Belfast, Ireland on 21 August 1900, youngest child of John Gibson, he served in the Royal Air Force during the First World War before coming to Canada in 1923 and settling at Winnipeg. He spent a number of years in the construction industry before establishing the contracting and engineering firm of H. E. Gibson and Company, which he operated for 45 years.

On 25 June 1932, he married Janet Macfarlane Taylor (1904-1992) at Knox United Church. They had a daughter and son, Terence Henry Gibson (1936-1954). The family lived at 144 Carpathia Road (circa 1949) and had a summer cottage at Victoria Beach where he served as Reeve (1951-1965). He was a charter member, President, and honorary member of the Rotary Club of West Winnipeg and was an active member of the Griffon's Club of Winnipeg and Westworth United Church, serving on its building and property committee as well as the Winnipeg Presbytery of the United Church of Canada.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 19 July 1987 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. He is commemorated by Gibson Drive, a former railway right-of-way, at Victoria Beach.
