Memorable Manitobans: Arthur Bertram Gardiner (1883-1963)

Funeral director.

Born at Winnipeg on 10 October 1883, son of George Gardiner and Lucinda Emily Knox (1860-1917), he eventually joined his father's funeral business, rising to become the President of A. B. Gardiner and Company. For over 50 years, he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Manitoba Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association. He was also a charter member of the Winnipeg Executive Association.

On 12 September 1917, he married Ethel May Pybus (1895-1974) and they had four children: Wilfrid Bertrand Gardiner (1919-?), Marjorie Ethel Gardiner (1921-?, wife of John Edwin Rose), Alan G. Gardiner (?-?), and Jean Gardiner (?-?, wife of Bernhard Boecker). He was a member of St. Andrews River Heights United Church, Masons (King Edward Lodge), Khartum Shriners, Odd Fellows, Canadian Order of Foresters, Loyal Orange Lodge, and St. Charles Country Club. He was a President of the Winnipeg Rotary Club.

He died at his Winnipeg residence, 295 Dromore Avenue, on 25 January 1963 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
