Memorable Manitobans: Clarence Wilbert Fines (1902-1994)

Educator.

Born at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on 11 June 1902, son of Archibald Alexander “Archie” Fines (1870-1945) and Mary Grace “Marie” Heale (1879-1962), his family moved to Manitoba by 1903 and resided at 561 Ross Street in Winnipeg (1906) before moving with the family to Lockwood, Saskatchewan (1911). By 1916, they returned to Manitoba, residing at Township 16, Range 2 West in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood. He attended the Central Normal School and worked in rural school districts, among which were Mowat School (1920-1921, Principal 1921), Leeland School (1921-1922), Morweena School (1922), near 3-21-5 West (1926) in the Rural Municipality of Eriksdale, and was Principal of Moosehorn School (1930-1932) and Steep Rock School (1932-1935). On 6 September 1924, he married Mary Findlayson (1904-1997) at Winnipeg and they had four children, including Enid Fines (c1925-?) and Elaine Carol Fines (1927-2019). He died at Peterborough, Ontario on 27 July 1994.
