Memorable Manitobans: George William Burrell (1857-1941)

Educator.

Born in Ontario on 11 November 1857, he was Principal of Swan Lake School (1912-1916), Emerson School (1916-1917), and Sanford School (1920) and taught at several rural schools across the province, including Riverton School (1921), Bluff Island School (1922-1923), High Plains School (1929-1931), Cameron School, Mary Hill School, and Cardale School. On 24 March 1917, he married English immigrant Margaret Annie Gertrude Whincup (c1898-1980) in the Rural Municipality of Thompson and they had three children: George Edward Burrell (1919-1985), Margaret Sarah Burrell (1921-?), and Charles J. Burrell (1928-2005). He died at Dominion City on 3 May 1941 and was buried in the Green Ridge Cemetery.
