Memorable Manitobans: Walter Constantine Bilych (c1911-1984)

Educator.

Born at Chatfield around 1911, he attended school in Teulon and Winnipeg. His teaching career in Manitoba spanned four decades, including working at Sapton School, Stonewall School, Zhoda School, Ulster School, Lonesand School, Franko School (1930-1934), Sirko School, Sunbeam School (1938-1942), Shevchenko School (1942-1944), and was Principal of Sundown School / Sundown Village School (1944-1961) before retiring to Winnipeg. He was a member of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church, Self Reliance League, and supporter of St. Andrew’s College. On 17 April 1933, he married Elizabeth Danylchuk (1915-1999) at Zhoda and had two children. He died at the Health Sciences Centre on 26 January 1984 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
