This organization was established in 1925 as the Board of Administrators of the Teachers' Retirement Fund Act, to oversee the newly enacted provincial legislation that mandated all public school teachers in Manitoba (except those in Winnipeg who contributed to the Winnipeg Teachers’ Pension Fund) to contribute 1% of their salary toward a pension.
The founding members of the Board were Colin Campbell Ferguson of the Great West Life Assurance Company, Winnipeg City Treasurer Harry Cowan Thompson, teacher representative Henry Johnston “Harry” Everall, and Secretary W. W. McDonald.
In 1948, the name was changed to the Teachers’ Retirement Allowances Fund and teacher contributions were raised to 5% with an additional contribution from the provincial government.
The organization was presented with an MHS Centennial Organization Award in Fall 2025.
