Memorable Manitobans: Gordon George Newton (1931-2026)

Educator, administrator.

Born at Elgin on 29 June 1931, his family followed the career of his railwayman father, living at Hartney, Roseisle, and Algar. He attended the University of Manitoba and received BSc (1953) and BEd (1954) degrees, later earning an MEd degree. He worked as an educator in the St. Vital area of Winnipeg, serving as a teacher at Glenlawn Collegiate (1957-1958), Principal, and Superintendent of the St. Vital School Division from 1972 until retirement in 1986. He served on the Board of the Teachers’ Retirement Allowances Fund (1961-1967).

On 7 August 1954, he married Margaret Alice Etsell (1932-2020) at Virden and they had a son and two daughters. He was the founding Director and Vice-Chair of the Awasisak Mēskanôw Greenway.

He died at Winnipeg on 27 January 2026.
