Memorable Manitobans: Stephen Thomas Windsor (1874-1967)

Educator, lawyer.

Born in Ontario on 29 November 1874, son of farmers Francis “Frank” Windsor (1838-1912) and Elizabeth Hobbs (1842-1918), he moved west with his family to Manitoba by 1891. He attended Wesley College in Winnipeg where he graduated with a BA degree (1899) from the University of Manitoba and attained the Silver Medal in Mathematics (1899).

His career as an educator included work as a teacher at Mountain View School (1894), Ancrum School (1895), and Oakleaf School (1900), and as Principal of Hamiota School (1901-1906) and Glenboro School (1906-1907). By 1911, he had transitioned to a legal practise in Saskatchewan, initially at Arcola (1911) and at Kamsack by 1913.

On 12 June 1912, he married Jemima Jane “Jennie” Kirk (?-1956) at Hamiota. They had five children: Stephen Everett Windsor (1913-?), James Nelson Windsor (1914-?), Maud Amelia Windsor (1916-?), Charles Leslie Windsor (1918-?), and Harold Francis Windsor (1919-?).

He died at Kamsack, Saskatchewan in August 1967 and was buried locally in the Riverview Cemetery.
