Born in England on 18 June 1847, he came to Canada in 1880 and settled first at Winnipeg. After living in Brandon until at least 1886, where he worked as a bricklayer and builder, he returned to Winnipeg and operated a construction business with some of his sons until his death.
He and wife Sarah Anne Newton (1848-1912) had seven children: Joseph Wheeldon (1871-1932), Frank Wheeldon (1873-1919), Albert Wheeldon (1875-1934), Harry Wheeldon (1878-1945), Ethel Wheeldon (1882-?, wife of William E. Small), Alice Mary Wheeldon (1886-?, wife of Howard Henry Thurston), and Nellie Wheeldon (1889-?, wife of John Thompson Rollo).
He died at Winnipeg on 1 April 1903 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
