Born at Eindehoven, Netherlands on 6 January 1931, one of twelve children of Petrus “Peter” van Ginkel (c1891-1958) and Johanna van Ginkel (c1900-1982), he immigrated to Winnipeg with his family in January 1954. He and his brothers Frank van Ginkel and Antonius “Tony” Van Ginkel founded the Van Ginkel Brothers Construction Company (later Trident Construction Company) and was an active member of the construction industry until retirement in 1997.
On 10 January 1959, he married Josephine Antoinette Mayda at St. John Cantius Roman Catholic Church and they subsequently had three daughters and two sons. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and his church, and served as an advisor on construction projects in the Archdiocese of St. Boniface.
He died at the Health Sciences Centre on 6 July 2010 and was buried in the Belgian Sacred Heart Cemetery.
