Memorable Manitobans: Roy H. Tavener (c1926-1994)


His childhood was spent in the Dugald area. In 1950, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba and received a specialization in psychiatry five years later. He joined the medical staff of the Selkirk Mental Health Centre in 1950 and served as Medical Superintendent from 1959 to 1967 when he moved to Winnipeg to become Provincial Psychiatrist and Assistant Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services. For over 18 years, he was a member of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. He retired in 1981 but continued a private psychiatric practice at the Misericordia Hospital. He served as President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Selkirk Rotary Club (1961). He died at Winnipeg on 17 September 1994.
