Memorable Manitobans: Arthur Robert “Bob” Tanner (1912-1969)
Born at Moosomin, Saskatchewan on 9 July 1912, son of Arthur William Tanner and Flora Blanche Richmond, he graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1937. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1939 and retired from military reserves, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, in 1955.
He practiced medicine at the Grace Hospital and taught obstetrics at the Manitoba Medical School. He was director of United Health Insurance, a subsidiary of the Manitoba Medical Service, from 1959 to 1964, when he was appointed director of medical insurance in the provincial health department. He was the first Chairman of the Manitoba Medical Services Insurance Corporation.
On 1 April 1939, he married Phyllis Elizabeth Tod (1913-2003) at Winnipeg. They had two children.
He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital, following a lengthy illness, on 14 August 1969 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery.
