Born at Winnipeg on 9 September 1912, daughter of Margaret Dickson (1879-1933) and Charles Fredrick George Foot (1873-1927), the family moved from their dairy farm north of the city to a farmstead near Stonewall in 1918. She attended Centre School, graduated grade 12 from Stonewall Collegiate (1930), and enrolled at the Central Normal School (1930). She taught at Rockwood School (1931-1939; Principal 1934-1939) and Balmoral School (1940-1941, 1963-1965), the latter to which she returned after raising a family. On 25 July 1942, she married Walter John Smith (1916-1988) at All Saints Victoria Anglican Church and the couple had two children. She died at the Concordia Hospital on 6 December 2006 and was buried in the Stonewall Cemetery.
