Memorable Manitobans: Gustav Kneller “Gus” Reimer (1905-1980)

Educator.

Born in the Rural Municipality of Tache on 25 October 1905, son of Gerhard Warkentin Reimer (1876-1948) and Karoline Kneller (1877-1914), he grew up at family homestead within Township 6 Range 6 East and lived at Steinbach (1921) where he completed his schooling. He attended teacher training, and began a career in education as a teacher at Greenland School (1922-1924), reportedly in the greater Altona area (c1920s), Gruenfeld School (1928-1942; Principal 1940-1942), Steinbach School / Steinbach Schools No. 1 & 3 (1942-1953), Steinbach Collegiate (1954-1961), and Steinbach Collegiate Institute (1961-1965). Despite formal retirement in July 1965, he returned to the classroom for several additional years as a teacher at Kornelsen Junior High School (1966-1971).

On 21 July 1929, he married Mary Quiring Friesen (1906-1976) in the Rural Municipality of Hanover and they had four children; Dr. Donald Hugh Reimer, Olivine Reimer (1930-2002, wife of Henry Froese Klassen), Louis E. Reimer, and Stuart W. Reimer. On 29 October 1977, he remarried to Hilda Lohrenz Quiring (1908-2007) at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

He died at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon on 6 February 1980 and his body was returned to Manitoba for burial in the Steinbach Memorial Cemetery.
