Memorable Manitobans: Helen Marjory Curle Powell (1916-2006)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 29 November 1916, daughter of Ida and John Curle, she attended Grosvenor School, Gordon Bell High School, and Kelvin High School. On 12 September 1941, she married E. Gary Powell (1916-1973) and they had four children. She initiated the library at Tuxedo Park School and served as the first female trustee on the Tuxedo School Board. Along with fellow trustees Joe McMillan and Dr. George Ferguson, she was instrumental in the establishment of Laidlaw School and Shaftesbury High School. She died at Winnipeg on 26 November 2006.
