Memorable Manitobans: Mary Alice Osborne Norman (1884-1986)
Born at Igatpura, India in 1884, she came to Canada with her parents in 1890 where they homesteaded in the Balmoral area. They moved to Winnipeg where she attended grade school and the Central Normal School.
She taught for many years, as well as teaching English to adult foreign students and children students with mental disabilities at the Old St. Andrews Church. She taught at Florence Nightingale School (1945-1946) and was Principal of the School for the Mentally Retarded (1947-?) and was made an honourary life-member of the Manitoba Educational Association for her contributions to education.
On 31 July 1912, she married Frank Robert Victor Norman (1887-1975) in Winnipeg and had two children: Francis Osborne “Oz” Norman and Genevieve Eileen Norman (1915-?, wife of Stanley Tilley Howe).
She died at Winnipeg on 14 July 1986 and was buried in the St. James Cemetery.
