William George Newman

Physician.
Born at Winnipeg on 20 December 1918, son of George Newman (1880-1960) and Myna Lilian Marks (1895-1992), after graduating from the Manitoba Medical College in 1942, he interned at the Winnipeg General Hospital and started a private medical practice in 1943. During the Second World War, he served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps.
Following his military discharge, he had a general medical practice in the Royal Trust Building and later in the Medical Arts Building. As of 1956, he was a member of the Board of Directors for the Medical Arts Building and became its Chairman in 1963, serving until retirement in 1990. He was instrumental in the design and construction of the Medical Arts Building and the adjoining parkade. He also served as Chief of Staff for the Grace General Hospital.
On 27 February 1943, he married nurse Myra Joanne Morrison (1920-2009) and they had three daughters and a son. Active in causes relating to conservation and game refuges, he enjoyed target shooting and held executive positions in rifle and trapshooting associations. He incorporated the Aspen Gun Club in 1988. In recognition of his service, he received a Canadian Centennial Medal (1967) and an award from the US Rifle Team for special assistance at the 1967 Pan Am Games.
He died at Winnipeg on 12 July 2000.
