Businessman.
Born in Ontario on 15 October 1865, he came to Winnipeg in 1894 and established the firm of Meikle, McLean and Company which sold musical instruments. About 1902, Meikle withdrew from the business and moved to Port Arthur, Ontario, leaving McLean solely in charge. The company became known as J. J. H. McLean that became well known throughout the 20th century.
In 1892, he married Ellen Morrison (1869-1956) at Lindsay, Ontario and they had four daughters: Jemima Pauline McLean (1893-1977, wife of James Andrew Dowler), Helen Maria McLean (1895-?), Mary Victoria McLean (1897-1980, wife of Francis Hubert Judd), and Jean Melkle McLean (1899-1954, wife of Wilfrid Linton Parrish, daughter-in-law of William Linton Parrish). The family lived at 266 Colony Street at the time of his death. He was a member of the Masons.
He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 12 January 1903 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
