Born at Elderslie, Paisley Township, Ontario on 22 September 1875, he learned the printing trade at the Milverton (Ontario) Sun then came to Russell in 1900 on an invitation from Rev. D. M. McKay, then a Presbyterian minister there. For the next 36 years, he was editor and publisher of The Russell Banner, taking over from George Greenshields Meikle.
On 9 August 1911, he married Margaret Maud Hunter (1881-1968) in the RM of Harrison and they subsequently had two children: Jean Isabella McIntyre (1912-?, wife of Thomas Bell) and Joseph Mitchell McIntyre (1914-1940). He served on the Russell town council for several terms and, in his earlier years, was a keen athlete in lacrosse, football, and curling. He was a member of the Manitoba Weekly Newspapers Association, Russell Curling Club, and Masonic Lodge. He lived in retirement at Russell until early 1967 when he went to live at the Middlechurch Home.
He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 3 August 1968 and was buried in the Russell Memorial Garden.
