Memorable Manitobans: George W. Markle (1879-1957)

Optometrist, jeweller.

Born in Ontario on 4 July 1879, he came to Winnipeg about 1901 and worked as an optician. He worked with jeweller T. J. Porte, later becoming a partner in the firm of Porte and Markle. In 1914, when Birks Dingwall took over the firm, Porte and Markle became joint managers. Later Markle was associated with Western Grocers and moved to Vancouver where he engaged in the import business. He retired to Los Angeles, California where he died on 20 March 1957. Surviving him were wife Meta and sons Clarke and Fletcher. His eldest son Hudson died in the Second World War.
