Cleric.
Born in the farming community of Hamlin, Alberta in 1923 to Kataryna Eurichuk (1900-1975) and Peter Luchak (1897-1974), grandson of immigrants from Bukovyna in Western Ukraine, the family moved to Vernon, British Columbia in 1942. There, they set up a forestry and sawmill operation, and where he soon became a licensed timber grader. He later moved to Edmonton, Alberta to become educated as a school teacher.
However, this calling was cut short by his service in the Canadian Armed Forces, and upon demobilization, he decided to enroll in Theology at the newly established St. Andrew's College at Winnipeg. He was part of the first class of graduates with a Licentiate in Theology. In later years, he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Winnipeg, and was granted a Bachelor of Theology degree from St. Andrew's College. In 1952, he was ordained into the priesthood of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada.
Also in 1952, he married Dobrodiyka Yustena “Jane” Romaniuk (1929-2023), and together they spent the rest of their lives serving the Church while raising their two children. His postings included Willingdon, Alberta; Oshawa, Ontario; St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral at Edmonton; and Holy Trinity Cathedral at Winnipeg. In 1970, he was elected to the post of Chairman of the Presidium of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada, where he served for ten years. He was also Principal of St. Andrew's College (1987-1988).
He was the recipient of a number of honours, including the title of Right Reverend and a distinguished service award from St. Andrew's College. He was a long-time member of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League, the Order of St. Andrew, and the chaplaincy of the Ukrainian Legion Branch 141. He especially enjoyed working with young people in youth organizations across Canada in his pastoral capacity. He dabbled in oil painting, stained glass work, and carpentry and enjoyed singing, gardening, and camping.
He died at Winnipeg on 5 December 2010 and was buried in the St. Michael’s Cemetery at Edmonton, Alberta.
