Memorable Manitobans: Ross Adair Johnston (1930-2020)

Lawyer, judge.

Born at Winnipeg on 12 April 1930, son of Percy Johnston and Pauline Adair, he grew up in the Wolseley and West Broadway areas, attending Mulvey School and Gordon Bell High School. He received a BA degree from United College (1952) and a law degree from the University of Manitoba (1956) then practiced law with the firm of Johnston, Jessiman and Gardner. He served as a provincial court judge from February 1969 to July 1994. In 1959, he married Elizabeth Josephine “Betty Jo” Ball (1930-2019) and they had four children. Active with the Lions Club, he was its President, District Governor, and Director Emeritus. He was a member of the Masons, Khartum Shriners, and St. Andrews River Heights United Church. He died at Winnipeg on 31 October 2020 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
