Memorable Manitobans: David Johnston (1899-1968)

Municipal official.

Born at Blackwell, Carlisle, England on 25 June 1899, during the First World War he served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He came to Canada in 1923 and worked for a short time with the Canadian National Railway. From 1930 to his retirement in 1964, he worked with the Winnipeg Central Heating Company.

Active in the community, he was President of the St. James Legion, President of the St. James Chamber of Commerce, President of the St. James Legion Holding Company, and a member of the Masons (St. James Lodge) and Canukeen Club. He served as a trustee on the St. James School Board (1945-1953) and was a St. James alderman (1953-1968). In recognition of his community service, he received a Canadian Centennial Medal (1967).

He and wife Bessie had three children: David Johnston (?-1925), Shirley Johnston (wife of E. Breen), and Winnifred Johnston (wife of B. Smith).

He died at the Grace Hospital on 24 April 1968 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. His honorary pallbearers were Alfred William “Bill” Hanks, Reginald Frederick “Reg” Wightman, D. Graham, A. Mankling, P. Moss, Walter Bannister, T. Rourke, George David Lazier Minaker, and D. MacDonald.
