Memorable Manitobans: Cornelius “Neil” Hoogstraten (1910-2003)
Art dealer, artist.
Born at Winnipeg on 11 February 1910, son of Dutch immigrants Jacob Hoogstraten (1881-1973) and Jansje Pleoger (?-?), brother of Jacob Hoogstraten, he ran a commercial art business until retirement in the 1980s. A longtime member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club, he served as President of the Manitoba Society of Artists (1966-1969). On 18 July 1936, he married writer Lavinia Merle “Vinia” Ragland (1912-2000) and they had a daughter and a son. He moved to Toronto, Ontario in 2001 and died there on 8 December 2003.
