Memorable Manitobans: Edith Mary Bloomer Hayes (1884-1969)

Educator

Born in the Rural Municipality of Harrison on 12 December 1884, daughter of Mary Elizabeth McConnell (1852-1936) and James Bloomer (1852-1918), she lived at Minnedosa for a time and became a schoolteacher. She taught at Rosemount School (?-?), Minnedosa School (1912-1914), Stockton School (1914-1915, Principal), and Mount Royal College at Calgary (c1918).

On 15 July 1920, she married Reverend Arthur Edward Hayes (1885-1938) at her mother's Winnipeg residence, 585 Sherburn Street, by Rev. H. G. Crozier of Chalmers Presbyterian Church. The couple had three children: Beatrice Mary Hayes (1921-1992), Dorothy Lawrence Hayes (1924-1993), and Gordon James Hayes (1927-1975). They lived in Alberta at Vulcan and Jasper before retiring to Vancouver, British Columbia by the 1960s.

She died at North Vancouver on 16 July 1969 and was buried in the Capilano View Cemetery at West Vancouver.
