Memorable Manitobans: George Adrian Griffith (1901-1974)

Farmer, businessman, municipal official.

Born on a farm near Rounthwaite on 29 January 1901, son of Gwynfred John Griffith and Helen Buchanan Pringle, he farmed in the Rounthwaite area until his death, producing seed grain for the A. E. McKenzie Seed Company at Brandon. He also worked as a cattle buyer. In later years, he operated the Griffith Construction & Equipment Company which built a section of the Perimeter Highway around Winnipeg. On 14 December 1926, he married Nora Alexis Elder (1901-1989) at Brandon. They had two children: James Adrian Griffith and Margaret Carole Catherine Griffith. He served on the Rounthwaite School Board and was for many years a Councillor (1948-1953) and Reeve (1954-1974) for the Rural Municipality of Oakland. He was a Liberal candidate in the 1959 provincial general election. He died at Brandon on 20 May 1974 and was buried in the Rounthwaite Cemetery.
