Memorable Manitobans: George Melvin Fleury (1935-2021)

Community activist.

Born at Ste. Madelaine on 12 March 1935, he was one of the founders of the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) and served as the first Vice-President of its Southwest Region, elected in 1968. He opened the first MMF in Brandon and served on its Board of Directors until 1979. He was a fluent speaker and advocate for the preservation and teaching of the Michif language, serving on the MMF Michif Language Committee, Indigenous Languages of Manitoba Board, and the Manitoba Aboriginal Languages Strategy Board. In recognition of his community service, he received the Murray and Muriel Smith Award from the Manitoba Council on Aging (2017) and was inducted into the Order of the Metis Nation (2019). He and wife Edith had twelve children. He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 5 February 2021 and was buried in the Minnedosa Cemetery.
